Beyond the Sustainable Development Goals

inequalityThe Sustainable Development Goals – despite their positive and progressive rhetoric – by no means constitute a transformative agenda for meeting the basic needs of all people within the means of our shared planet. This report argues that we may never see an end to poverty “in all its forms everywhere” unless ordinary people unite in their millions and demand the universal realisation of fundamental human rights through huge, continuous and worldwide demonstrations for economic justice.

What comes from the heart reaches the heart

Artist Prince EaInspirational artist Prince Ea, Founder of Make SMART Cool and the brain behind the viral “Dear Future Generations: Sorry” video (http://lohasfilm.de/hHT4), then shared his perspective on the power of content. Notwithstanding the standing ovation he received from the audience prior to his talk – only the second standing ovation in SB’s plenary history – Prince Ea’s heartfelt presentation urged brand leaders to use creativity and emotion to reach people from all walks of life to do good. “I believe that what comes from the heart reaches the heart. When it comes from the heart, people will be drawn to the brand,” he said.

Innovation and Transformation, Are You Ready?

matterI’ve written a lot about the Internet of Things (IoT), wherein a rapidly growing number of machines and sensors have IP addresses and they are connected, gathering and transmitting information all the time. But in the world of extreme connectivity we’re building, it isn’t all about data collection and high-speed analytics. There’s going to be a reorientation in the way we think about energy too.

The Road to Sustainability

One - A Survival Guide for the FutureAfter years of working alongside many of the world’s great business minds, having been seduced by the gods of progress and capitalism, I had an awakening that reshaped the way I now saw the world. I began to realise that what I had been taught at university and various other institutions just did not stack up. It became blindingly clear that the current economic model with its fixation on growth was flawed, highly unsustainable and detrimental to both society and the environment.

Pitchforks Are Coming - For Us Plutocrats

politico magazineYou probably don’t know me, but like you I am one of those .01%ers, a proud and unapologetic capitalist. I have founded, co-founded and funded more than 30 companies across a range of industries—from itsy-bitsy ones like the night club I started in my 20s to giant ones like Amazon.com, for which I was the first nonfamily investor. Then I founded aQuantive, an Internet advertising company that was sold to Microsoft in 2007 for $6.4 billion. In cash.

Prosumer and the Sharing Economy

The New Consumer and the Sharing EconomyIn earlier centuries, most people lived in what could be termed an “essentials economy.” They grew or made what they could and bartered for or purchased only those additional items they absolutely needed in order to get by. As modern consumerism took hold in the early to mid-twentieth century, the most developed markets happily transitioned to an “accumulation economy.” With leading economists and politicians preaching the gospel of consumerism as an essential driver of economic growth, citizens in wealthier countries were exhorted to spend freely and often.

Welcome to the COMMON Marketplace

Common.isWell, the sun seems to have come up again, and it's a brand-new day. Time to go about the business of living in this world. Time to go to work. Time to play. Time to think. Time to dream. To eat. And drink. And wouldn't it be great if you could do all that working, playing, eating, drinking, dreaming, sharing in a way you knew wasn't screwing up the planet along the way? Wouldn't it be great to know that the transaction of everyday life contributed to the good of the planet and all the creatures on it (including, of course, you, and those you love most)?

The State of Green Business 2014

State of Green Business 2014State of Green Business, our seventh annual assessment of corporate sustainability trends and metrics, is just out. It paints a picture that is both optimistic and highly problematic - a perfect metaphor for the sector. First, the good news. The state of the art of corporate sustainability continues to evolve. What's business as usual today was not that long ago innovative, even breakthrough: biobased products, accounting systems that place a realistic value on water and carbon, smart supply chains that optimize transportation and energy, renewable energy that isn't just for show, and more.

A New Age of Communication

serchlightsIt’s no secret that today’s media world is driven by technology -- smart phones, desktops, laptops and tablets -- that very few really believed would come. Digital media unleashed a tidal wave of information but at the same time destroyed traditional media economics. This was never clearer than in recent years, when journalism lost more than 18,000 local news jobs. The Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities joined others to declare a crisis in local news. Newspapers closed. Congress held hearings. Civic leaders worried about their towns.

Made in the USA: Bringing manufacturing back to America

made in americaAs nation’s economy begins to recover, it is imperative that the United States bring manufacturing jobs back to America. This goal has been at the top of the agenda, And so I was pleased to read the series published in the Courier Times and Intelligencer: “Made in the USA.” The series highlighted local, small businesses and the importance of domestic manufacturing and its impact on manufacturers’ bottom line, their employees, customers, and communities.

Discovering the Good Life

Photo by Ethan MooreAh, the Good Life.  Measure your quality-of-life with the Commons Checklist. Fine wine. Fast cars. Beautiful people. The beach house on St. Bart’s. The ski chalet in Switzerland. The apartment overlooking Central Park. The ranch in Montana. The castle atop . . . Dream on! For the overwhelming majority of us, living like this is about as likely as pitching for the Yankees. Our days are not spent on the beach or the ski slopes, but rather commuting to work, struggling with bills, and perhaps sensing that the best things in life are passing us by. It’s easy to feel small and drab compared to the millionaires and movie stars whose exploits are chronicled across the media.

How to Be More than a Mindful Consumer

YES MagazineThe way we make and use stuff is harming the world - and ourselves. To create a system that works, we can't just use our purchasing power. We must turn it into citizen power. Stuff activist Annie Leonard: “Consumerism, even when it tries to embrace ‘sustainable’ products, is a set of values that teaches us to define ourselves, communicate our identity, and seek meaning through accumulation of stuff, rather than through our values and activities and our community.” YES! photo by Lane Hartwell.

Ego 2 Ego

Otto ScharmerToday, we are in an age of disruption. Global crises challenge just about every aspect of society – finance, food, fuel, water, resources, poverty. The list goes on and on. Yet, this disruption brings the possibility of profound personal, societal and global renewal. We need to stop and ask: Why do we collectively create results nobody wants? What keeps us locked into the old ways of operating? And, perhaps most importantly, what can we do to transform these patterns that keep us locked in the past?

Can Sustainable Consumerism Work?

foodmilesCritics of sustainable certification and labeling programs often have fair points, but they miss the bigger picture. Who certifies the certifiers? Study after study is showing how green consumers are making a difference. As market shares of “green” products grow, so does debate about their true impacts.
